Pope’s Urn

This piece of permanent public art plus seating is situated on Champion’s Wharf, next to the River Thames in Twickenham. It was commissioned by Richmond Borough Council in 2015 to coincide with the Rugby World Cup coming to Twickenham. Pope’s Urn and the poetry on benches which surrounds it celebrates the life and work of the poet Alexander Pope, the town’s most famous resident. It arose out of a design charette and feasibility study for how public art could be used to transform sense of place.

The artwork has been a great success, transforming Champions Wharf into a popular and much-frequented public space, often used for wedding photos by couples just married in the nearby Registry Office in York House. It is a fine example of how an appropriate and well-executed piece of public art can celebrate sense of place. It is one of a number of public art commissions delivered by Graham Henderson since 2006.
